Are 63 inch curtains out of style? ›

When it comes to living and dining rooms, the standard curtain lengths can range from 63 inches to 120 inches, depending on the size of your windows and your personal style. Hanging the curtains about 4 inches above the window or closer to the ceiling can make the room look taller and more elegant.

The standard curtain lengths are 63, 84, 96, 108 and 120 inches long, and curtain panels are typically 48 inches wide. Curtain lengths will also vary depending on the style you're looking for: Float: The curtains “float” just above the floor.

To calculate curtain width, start by measuring the width of the window. Then multiply that number by 1.5 to 3 times, depending on the desired fullness and pleating style, says Kelly.

A common rule for displaying curtains properly says the curtains finished width should be at least 2 times the width of your window (if not more) to achieve a look of proper fullness. Example: If your window measures 36" wide (window width x 2 = 72"), you need curtains that will give a minimum width of 72".

The total drapery width should be at least 2 times the window/rod widths. If you're hanging curtains just to frame a window and don't intend to shut them, you can round down to 1.5 times the width.

Remember, a good rule of thumb is to place them 4 to 6 inches above the top of your window frame. Next, figure out where the brackets should be. Your rod should be about 8 to 12 inches wider than your window, so make a mark about 4 to 6 inches beyond the window frame on each side.
