Delainey Halverson shines against loaded competition

5 high school girls golf stars of the week: Aug. 29 edition (1)

Oregon senior Delainey Halverson has had two successful outings to start her senior season.

The first was the Taylor Clark Invite at Brighton Dale Links in Kansaville, which was hosted by Westosha Central. She finished second with a 74.

“Typically she doesn’t like link courses, so finishing second in a loaded leaderboard was a strong showing for Delainey,” Oregon coach Casey Johnson said.

Halverson was even par for most of the day, but she faded at the end, something Johnson attributed to the six-hour pace of play.

“Her drives were long and kept her out of trouble, and her chipping and putting were spot on,” Johnson said.

She then finished 11th with a 161 at the Brookfield Central/Menomonee Falls Invite.

“It’s the most loaded tournament of the regular season,” Johnson said.

Maia Marsich earns two top 10s

Wisconsin Dells junior Maia Marsich’s 86 tied Monona Grove junior Josie Graham for sixth place, but Marsich finished seventh because of the handicap rule at the Baraboo Invite.

“I’m very happy about that,” Marsich said. “There is one hole (14) I could’ve done way better on that could’ve put me closer. It was a par 4 and I hit a 9 on it.”

She was the Chiefs’ leading golfer at Baraboo Country Club.

Marsich finished 11th at the Waunakee Invite with a 91, and her 95 was good for 16th at the Sparta Invite.

She started her season with a South Central Conference meet at Prairie du Chein Country Club, where she placed second with a 48 over nine holes.

“I’m really happy with where I’m at and I think I still have a lot of room to grow,” Marsich said. “I’m excited.”

Macy Monte took 11th with a 92 at Baraboo Country Club during the Baraboo Invite.

5 high school girls golf stars of the week: Aug. 29 edition (4)

Freshman Berkley Weber has participated in three nine-hole dual meets and one 18-hole invite so far this season and has come away with strong finishes.

“She is really stepping up in the top of our varsity players,” Portage coach Maddison Williams said. “She really does not get overwhelmed or discouraged at all, even if there is a string of bad shots.”

She shot 48 against Mount Horeb, and 49s against both Baraboo and Madison Edgewood to kickstart dual meets this season. She alsoplaced 19th our of 47 finishers with a 104 at the Baraboo Invite.

Williams said Weber has a “super consistent” game and great control over her shots.

“She can quickly come back from a bad shot and really make it seem like there wasn’t a bad shot in the first place,” Williams said about Weber, who has been the Warriors’ leading scorer in all of Portage’s meets this season.

Maddy Wilcox finds groove early on

Middleton has played in four events so far this season, andsenior Maddy Wilcox has stood in the early going.

“Maddie has an awesome attitude,” Middleton coach Becky Halverson said. “I would say one of the best I’ve seen or coached in girls golf. … I’m very pleased where she placed last week compared to the competition. To have four scores in the low 80s is a great start for the season for her.”

Wilcox finished in the mid-to-low 80s in each of the events. Her first score of the season was an 85 at Washington Country Club for the Brookfield Central/Menomonee Falls Invite. She carded an 80 at the Whitefish Bay Invite at Wanaki Country Club, which pleased Halverson because the course was a par 70.

Middleton hosted a triangular with Madison West and Sun Prairie East at its home course, Pleasant View, and Wilcox shot an 84.

Her second best score so far was an 81 at Thornberry Creek for 13th overall at the Bay Port Invite. She parred the par-5 No. 5, which she posted a 10 on two years ago.

“She doesn’t let a bad shot get to her,” Halverson said. “She focuses on the shot ahead of her instead of what’s behind her.”
