Fireworks begin around dusk, but this family-friendly event has plenty to enjoy before the first sparks fly. The center itself holds historical rele- vance, said Faith Scott, Director.

It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the first off-base United Service Organization (USO) in the United States and was built in 1941. The USO is a non- profit organization chartered by Congress to provide support for service members and their families. For the Fourth of July, this translates to offering almost free co*ke floats. Starting at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 30, residents will be able to visit the center to purchase a clas- sic co*ke float for five pennies, or a nickel if preferred.

The event will be reminiscent of days past. in the day during World War II, co*ke floats were offered at this location for 5 said Scott. The grounds will open at 5:30 p.m. for this free event, and guests can expect to find activities available for all ages. There will be bounce houses, car- nival-type games and waterslides set up on the grounds, and par- ents are recommended to bring along swim- suits, towels and dry clothes for the kids. For the younger kids, an indoor preschool soft play area will be set up with games for them to enjoy as well.

During the event, live music will be per- formed by a local band called the Fresh Coat Trio. They are a jazz en- semble featuring piano, bass and drums, and will be playing two sets. The first set is expected to be from p.m., and the second set from p.m. Should guests find themselves hungry during the event, a va- riety of food trucks will be available to choose from, such as Creole Hidden Garden, Hi-Li- cious Street Kitchen, Grub Hub, Rib Shack Barbecue, Specialty Sno- cones, Bahama and more. Guests are also welcome to bring their own coolers, snacks and non-alco- holic beverages along if they wish.
