Is TB covered by insurance? ›

PPD Skin Test (TST)

The tuberculin protein used in the test is extracted from Mycobacterium tuberculosis cultures and is used as a purified-protein derivative. A standardized PPD-S utilizes a tuberculous mycobacterium.

Sputum tests

A relatively quick laboratory test can tell if the sputum likely has the TB bacteria. But it may be showing bacteria with similar features. Another lab test can confirm the presence of TB bacteria. The results often take several weeks.

When should I know the results of my TB (tuberculosis) test? It takes 48 to 72 hours (two to three days) to complete a skin TB test. Once you have your second visit with your healthcare provider, they'll be able to tell you if your skin's reaction indicates that you may or may not have a TB infection.

It usually takes 2 to 10 weeks after exposure to a person with TB disease for the skin test to react positive. The test may also be falsely negative if the person's immune system is not working properly.

A single negative IGRA test done within the prior 12 months may be accepted. Individuals with a positive IGRA should receive medical evaluation for TB, including symptom evaluation, a chest x-ray and other tests as indicated.

Side effects are uncommon from the Mantoux skin test. However, a person who has been exposed to TB germs may occasionally have a sizable reaction, which may cause some mild itching, swelling or irritation. These kinds of reactions should disappear in one to two weeks.

A “positive” TB blood test result means you probably have TB germs in your body. Most people with a positive TB blood test have latent TB infection. To be sure, your doctor will examine you and do a chest x-ray. You may need other tests to see if you have latent TB infection or active TB disease.

Within 48 to 72 hours, a positive TB skin test is marked by an area of reddish induration greater than 10 mm. It is the induration (firm bump) that is gently palpated that determines the size, not the area of redness. This reaction is slightly larger than the average positive test 17 mm in size.
