Start your pattern with an even number of chain stitches. To make this swatch use 20 chain stitches.

FoundationChain an even number of stitches (CH)
Row 1Crochet 2 Half Double Crochet Stitch (HDC) in the 4th chain from the hook. Then SK (skip) the next chain space, * HDC 2 in the next chain space, then SK the next chain.   2. Row 2: Work 2 HDC in between each pair of HDC from the row below. Insert your hook into the space between them. Repeat across the whole row and end with one HDC into the top of the first chain three. Chain three and turn.

    Continue repeating row 2.
