Even though this pattern uses a half double crochet it doesn’t look like a HDC. You have several variations for this stitch.
The forest stitch is a variation to the v-stitch that doesn’t look like a v-stitch. Today we are making the no space classic half double crochet v stitch.
You can make this stitch with an additional chain between the two double crochet stitches but that is not this stitch.

To make the HDC V stitch pattern you need the following stitches and abbreviations:

How To Crochet Half Double Crochet V Stitch
Start your pattern with an even number of chain stitches. To make this swatch use 20 chain stitches.

| Row 1 | Crochet 2 Half Double Crochet Stitch (HDC) in the 4th chain from the hook. Then SK (skip) the next chain space, * HDC 2 in the next chain space, then SK the next chain. Repeat * all the way across the row. You have 1 chain left and crochet 1 DC. Chain 3 and then turn, this stitch counts as your first HDC |

Instructions
- Row 1: In the fourth chain from the hook work 2 HDC. SK (skip) the next chain space, * HDC 2 in the next chain space, then SK the next chain. Repeat * across the row and work one DC into the very last chain. Chain 3 and turn. (This will count as your first HDC)
- Row 2: Work 2 HDC in between each pair of HDC from the row below. Insert your hook into the space between them. Repeat across the whole row and end with one HDC into the top of the first chain three. Chain three and turn.
Continue repeating row 2.
