RADIO Star Tribune, quoting an unidentified source, reported yesterday that Browner signed for $850,000 for 1990, $850,000 for 1991 and $1 million for 1992, making him the highest-paid safety in the NFL. The contract also includes a signing bonus, but the amount was not known, the newspaper said. Browner and his agent, T.J. Pantaleo, could not be reached for comment. Browner, who has played in the last five Pro Bowls, had been upset for two years about his old contract, which paid him $350,000 last season.

He tried to renegotiate last summer and repeatedly requested a trade. Hockey The Detroit Red Wings fired coach Jacques Demers and hired former Washington Capitals coach Bryan Murray to be coach and general manager. Two days earlier, the club had moved general manager Jimmy Devellano up to a senior vice president's job, clearing the way for Murray to become the first person to hold both positions with the Red Wings since Alex Delvecchio in 1975-76. The St. Louis Blues traded center Peter Zezel and defenseman Mike Lalor to the Washington Capitals for left winger Geoff Courtnall.

The deal came about 12 hours after the Blues acquired free-agent defenseman Scott Stevens from the Capitals. Stevens signed a four-year offer sheet worth more than $4 million with the Blues July 5 and the Capitals were unwilling to match the sheet and unable to arrange a trade before a midnight Thursday deadline. Golf Scott Verplank took a one-stroke lead over Larry Rinker at the halfway mark of the $900,000 Bank of Boston Classic in Sutton, Mass. Verplank, who had a 4-under-par 67 in a downpour Thursday, added a bogey-free 68 in clear weather for a 135 total, seven strokes under at Pleasant Valley Country Club. A diabetic who said he changed medications and his lifestyle after hospital tests in March, Verplank, 26, took the lead after starting the second round two strokes back.

Rinker, winless in 10 years on the PGA Tour, shot a 65 over the layout. The field of 136 was trimmed to 73 for the final two rounds. The cut was made at 144. Ian Woosnam of Wales shot a 4-under 67 and moved into a three-stroke lead over Gordon Brand Jr. of Scotland and Mark McNulty of Zimbabwe in the Scottish Open at Gleneagles.

Harness racing Beach Towel, overcoming his outside No. 10 post position, took the lead with an eighth of a mile to run and then withstood a challenge by Jake and Elwood to win the $1,153,500 Meadowlands Pace in a photo finish. Scoot Outa Reach was third, another three of a length back. The winner paid $4.40, $3.20 and $2.80 and earned $576,750 for the Uptown Stable of New York City, pushing his career earnings to $1.609,180. Jake and Elwood paid $5.20 and $4.20 and Scoot Outa Reach $8.60.

She will play fifthseed Susan Sloane, who defeated fourth-seed Anne Smith, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2. Roz Fairbank will face second-seed Laura Gildemeister in the other semifinal. NBA The Charlotte Hornets have signed New York Knicks forward Johnny Newman to an offer sheet, team officials announced. The Knicks have 15 days to match the offer for the 6-7, 190-pound Newman, a restricted free agent who averaged 12.9 points a game last season.
